Dowling Hall Area Director

Salary: $31,500 – $35,000   The Area Director is a full-time live-in position with a furnished apartment, meal plan and parking. Because this is an all-female residence hall, it is a bona-fide occupational qualification that interested applicants be female.
The Area Director plays an integral role in the department through a variety of responsibilities and tasks. The Area Director works collaboratively with a variety of groups and individuals to create an inclusive, character-based community within the hall and on campus. The Area Director provides the primary leadership for the all female Dowling Hall, one of the university's fifteen residence halls. The Area Director reports to the Associate Director for Residence Life.
Responsibilities in Leadership and Community Development include:

  • Supervise one graduate hall director
  • Select, train, and supervise the 13 Resident Advisors and one Operations Manager.
  • Schedule and facilitate weekly business student staff meetings
  • Meet with the student staff in individual bi-weekly supervisory meetings
  • Provide the student staff with performance evaluations once each semester; provide feedback on a regular, on-going basis
  • Participate in the Student Leader selection process

Staff Training

  • Assist in the implementation of leadership training opportunities including the Fall and Spring Leadership Institutes, Leadership Seminars, and departmental training sessions
  • Provide regular training for the building staff, based on that staff's particular interests and needs
  • Serve as a resource to staff so they may explore independent staff development opportunities

Advising

  • Hall Council Advisor
  • Opportunity for club advising

Student Assistance

  • Act as a resource for students seeking assistance in resolving personal and/or community-related conflicts
  • Advise students with personal concerns, or refer them to other appropriate campus resources for assistance
  • Respond to crisis situations involving either individual students or groups of students

Programming Coordination

  • To establish an expectation and atmosphere among staff members which promotes diversity, education, and service within the community
  • Initiate, coordinate, and facilitate community, educational, and developmental programs within the hall
  • Establish a relationship with the hall chaplain to promote and coordinate faith development programming within the hall
  • Promote faculty/staff involvement within the hall
  • Promote programming through the hall council

Student Conduct

  • Act as the institutional representative in explaining and interpreting university and residence hall policies and procedures. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records on students
  • Act as the initial hearing officer for student conduct matters and serve on campus judicial boards

Administration

  • Coordinate the completion of various administrative tasks within area, including room and floor condition reports, work orders, room changes, hall openings and closings, discipline and programming reports
  • Act as the hall liaison to the physical plant and building service workers; monitor custodial performance within area
  • Act as liaison to public safety and parking services office
  • Act as the campus-wide Staff Member On Call during scheduled evenings and weekends
  • Coordinate the operation of the information desk within the building; in conjunction with the Operations Manager, supervise approximately ten student desk employees, develop policies and procedures, monitor overall operations, and provide service to residents and visitors
  • Monitor night access attendant and guest registration procedures in conjunction with operations manager
  • Develop, monitor and evaluate staff individual and hall-wide goals

 Master's Degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling, Higher Education, or related field is preferred, with prior student affairs experience. Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's Degree in Counseling, Education, or a closely related field and two years of experience in residence hall life.

The Area Director is a 12-month live-in position with a furnished apartment, year-round meal plan and parking. Start date is in August, exact date is flexible. Compensation package includes complete benefits package, tuition remission, and professional development funds.
